Tell me a little bit about yourself!
I went to school for costume and scenic design and spent 7 years working in Los Angeles as a costumer for film and TV until my husband got a job offer in New York City. When we moved to Brooklyn, I decided to spend less time on set and more time making things in my studio since it was my real passion. Brooklyn was an inspiring place to live, but when we had a baby, we knew it was time to move back to Los Angeles where we could have grass and blue skies! I feel like I'm living my dream...my son plays next to me all day while I make beautiful things in my studio for my two shops!
Where did the name of your store come from?
My home decor store, Haus and Home LA, is just a play on my last name, Hauser.
My kids decor store, Lord and Little, came from another family name, Lord. It is my dad's, my son's, and my middle name. One day, I was looking at my baby and thought "Aw...he's a little Lord!" But "Little Lord" was already taken, so I thought "Lord and Little" would be just as cute!
Why did you start making goods for both of your shops?
I opened "Haus and Home LA" and "Lord and Little" because making things is something I can't live without! Learning new methods, shopping for vintage fabrics and trims, and exploring traditional folk art and craft is something I have always done as an artist, costumer and maker. Trying to create something profitable from something I love seemed like an obvious next step.
What is your favorite item?
My favorite items from Haus and Home LA are the gigantic scarf floor pillows. I love that they give new life to vintage scarves and are huge and luxuriously soft and squishy!
From Lord and Little, my favorite would have to be David the elephant rag doll. I wanted to create dolls that would be more unisex and I love the tradition and history behind making rag dolls. I decided it would be fun if the modern version of the typical rag doll was high fashion and taken up a notch, so I make each little one-of-a-kind outfit by hand from silk and leather to studding and beading!
What is your most popular item?
My most popular item is the photographic triangle baby quilt from Lord and Little. It is featured and favorited a lot...so of course it is sold out right now...but I'm making more soon!
Where do you get the inspiration for your work?
Old books and magazines, the world, my son, my friends...everywhere!
What makes your store unique?
My goal is to keep my products truly special and handmade, so I make most items in very limited quantities. There are always new things coming and going from my shop, and a lot of it will never be made again!
What is the toughest part about making your goods/your artistic process?
When I realize that someone else had the exact same idea as me...and that they did it better! This world is jam packed with creative and talented people and sometimes it's hard to admit that, especially when you are sure that you have a new take on something...only to see it exactly as you had imagined or designed it in a store a few weeks later. This has happened to me countless times, but I've learned to breathe deeply, shrug, laugh and go back to the drawing board.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes! I've made a lot of custom letter pillows from Lord and Little and a few custom baby quilts as well. During the holiday season, I don't have a lot of time for custom work, but after December my time frees up a bit and I'm able to take on new projects.
