Tell me a little bit about yourself!
Bethany Putnam and I first came into acquaintance during a studio painting class while attending Kennesaw State University. We quickly became fast friends. We have been heterosexual life partners since then. After we both graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts we became roommates and Foxboxes was born! Foxboxes has been in business for almost 2 years now. We were recently honored as Best Indie Crafter's in Atlanta's Creative Loafing Magazine and are currently nominated for the RAW:natural born artists Semi Finals as well as one of the Founders Favorites! I moved to Southern California last November and we have been operating in Georgia and California since then.
Where did the name of your store come from?
The name Foxboxes was inspired by my Welsh Corgi - Cricket, who looks like a fox. We both love him to death and the name just sort of came to us and it stuck!
Why did you start making goods for Foxboxes?
We started making flasks as a creative outlet, and a way to be involved in the creative community. Both of us have a background in drawing and painting, but we wanted to try something different to express ourselves. Flasks are something that not everyone has or necessarily needs, but they make great gifts! They are also pretty handy during these tough times. Bethany and I have always had the same taste and we both gravitate towards any and all things vintage and antique. There was an old antique store by our apartment that sold vintage atlas maps and 1930's magazines, so I picked up a few and we started to collage the flasks with them. We also occasionally make coaster sets for those people that don't fit the flask demographic!
What is your favorite item?
I think my favorite item's are the one of kind collaged flasks. Bethany and I are best friends and good business partners because we both have the same weirdo sense of humor. I enjoy making these because when we put a funny saying on one of our flasks they always seem to have multiple meanings to different people. It always brings a smile to our faces to see people interpreting our humor in the flasks. They are so unique and no one will ever have that same flask, so it's fun seeing which flask gets picked since we hand make all of them ourselves. It's also interesting seeing the difference in style between the flasks that Bethany makes and the ones I make.
What is your most popular item?
Flasks, obviously! But the different map flasks tend to be very popular with everyone!
Where do you get the inspiration for your work?
Our inspiration for our work comes from our different locations, surroundings, and humor. I love going through vintage magazines and reading the old articles. The journalism and advertising were so different back then and I think that it's really under appreciated now. Some of the ad's you find in these magazines from the 1930's are hysterical- there is nothing like it now!
Also, our work inspires us to be smarter independent business women too!
What makes your store unique?
Our store is unique because our product is unique! Every flask is handmade and one of a kind!
What is the toughest part about making your goods/your artistic process?
Sometimes it's hard to part ways with our flasks. You can get a little attached to certain ones. There has probably been at least 20 different flasks that I have told myself I wanted to keep as my one flask...and I still haven't kept one! haha They just get better every time!
Do you take custom orders?
Yes! We do take custom orders! We have done several bridal and groomsmen party gifts! There are a lot of different images we can use whether it's old magazines, family pictures, maps, or even pet portraits! We get a lot of custom map requests because we usually don't have every city / country listed on the site, but that doesn't mean we can't make it!
Typically we would like about 2 weeks notice on a custom order so that we can ensure that it gets to our customers on time.
When is the last day I can order in time for Christmas Day?
Custom orders need to be in before Dec. 9th. All other orders need to be placed before December 16th!
Where can I see more of your work and buy a gift?
We are working on our website right now where soon our customers will be able to purchase directly through our site! But for now there's Etsy! :D
