Me? A girly girl? ~ Diane's Vintage Zest!

Me? A girly girl?

Today, an acquaintance said that I was a "girly girl."  Now, while I don't consider that an insult, I have absolutely no idea why he would say so!

First of all, you see all of the feminine things that I do, like sew, bake, and craft.  These are my private creative outlets at home, but I am much different in my professional life and otherwise.  I suppose it's the perception that I'm girly that mystifies me, because I don't see myself that way, even if I appreciate it in others.  When I was a child, I idolized feminine, elegant ladies like Grace Kelly, Ginger Rogers, and Jane Powell.  Definitely the best of of vintage "girly-ness."  :)

Being girly nowadays doesn't necessarily mean the same thing, although I don't see myself in this category either!  I even Googled "characteristics of a girly girl" just to make sure that I wasn't jumping to conclusions.  This may be a little rant-like, but here's a few reasons why I wholeheartedly disagree with Mr. Acquaintance.

Disclaimer: Some of my best friends are girly, so please don't take offense to this list.  They didn't!

1. I don't wear excessive amounts of pink.

The one and only garment with pink that I have sewed.  See here!

2. I could not care less about the Kardashians, The "Real" Housewives of anywhere, or the royal family.

3. I am anything but ladylike to bad drivers.

4. When I go to the gym, I actually work out.  I can even do real push-ups and pull-ups.

I lift a lot of weight!

5. I never liked playing with dolls, pretended to be a princess, or planned my future wedding when I was a kid.

6. I eat more than practically everyone I know, guys included.  On the same note, I cannot subsist on salads alone.  They're what comes BEFORE your meal and dessert.

My favorite salad.  To be followed by soup, entree, and dessert.  :)

7. I only know how to do my makeup one way, and it takes 3-5 minutes depending on if I'm in a moving car or not.  Painting my nails takes forever, so I just don't.

8. My hair is either down or in a ponytail.  I can't braid my own hair or use a curling iron correctly.

9. To me, going out at night means I need to wear more clothes because it's cold outside.  Never a teeny dress!

10. I always forget to accessorize until I'm headed out the door, because it's just not natural for me to remember.

11. I hate big department stores and malls in general.  However, I do love a good swap meet/flea market.  :)

Fabric galore at the swap meet!

12. I don't take selfies.  (On the blog, I don't even take pictures of myself!)

13. I say exactly what I mean because it takes too much effort to play games, let alone figure out the rules.  My guy appreciates this.  :)

14. I haven't read a beauty/fashion magazine since possibly high school.  Thus, #7-11.

15. I don't assume someone will carry my bags at the airport or pay for my drinks.  I refuse to put myself in any "damsel-in-distress" situations where someone has to help me.

Preview of a future post!  Now to just get the thing completely written...

16. There is no such thing as TMI in my world.  Seriously, nothing grosses me out.

17. I'm not scared of sharks or touching all those creepy crawlies like snakes, mice, cockroaches, and spiders.  Still, I wouldn't want to see one of them in my house, because then I would just be imagining an infestation!  THAT'S gross!

********************

Rant over!  That's just off the top of my head, but I'm sure I could come up with more.  Like I said, no offense to girly girls, but I'm just not one, and I'm still surprised someone thought that I was.  I wouldn't consider myself a tomboy either, but if anything, I'm closer to that end of the spectrum.

In fact, I asked myself, "Does having a big chest and long hair and make you a girly girl?"  But then I answered "No!" to my own question, because then Fabio would be considered girly then.  :)

Is it just me that feels stuck somewhere in the middle of the "girly/feminine scale vs. tomboy/masculine"?

Has anyone ever commented on their perception of you that is completely different than how you feel about yourself?
