Also, I wore it to the mimi g. conference on Day 1 with some leggings since I knew that I would have to be comfy and cool for all of that fabric shopping! Side note: I wore my Peplum Pencil Skirt on Day 2. :)
Without further ado, my Golden Goddess Draped Top!
The only problem with Lily is that she doesn't have any arms! She doesn't completely show how the top drapes, but you get the gist. :)
The "pattern" is actually traced from a cute open-weave maroon sweater that I got from Express about a year ago that ALWAYS gets cute compliments whenever I wear it. The first top I made attempted was actually a bit snug in the midsection because the gold fabric wasn't stretchy enough to mimic the open knit of the original top.
This one fits perfectly! I plan on wearing it off the shoulder with a camisole underneath, just like this.
For the fabric, I used a small scrap piece that I bought from the swap meet for $1. Since I already made one fail top (which I'll most likely donate to a younger cousin), this used about half of the scrap. Therefore, a top for less than 50 cents!
For all of you interested in my first attempt at serging, here is a peek at one of the inside seams. It's probably not perfect, but I'm impressed!
All in all, I'm excited about this top that took about an hour (including serger threading time) and cost less than $.50. I might just have to recreate it again!

Not bad for my first experience with the serger! I think that I could start an addiction to knit garments now, based on this experience. I'm anticipating that it won't go this smoothly again, but I'm crossing my fingers!
Do you use a serger and have any horror stories to share? I'm scared that my beginner's luck will fade soon!
Love your top! Did you use a pattern? My horror story - I was making a tailored shirt for my husband for our cotton wedding anniversary. I'd attached the collar, done button holes, sewn buttons and all I had to do was add the sleeves the cuffs and hem. While I was overlocking the shoulder seam, a piece of the shirt snuck underneath and was sewn into my seam. This would have been ok (just unpick and start again) except that it had been nipped by the knife, leaving a big hole just below the shoulder! This left me with only a few days to buy more fabric and start on a new shirt! Ugh. What a terrible tragedy to almost be done with a project and then destroy it. :( But the new shirt is awesome! My pattern was traced from a top that I already owned and then adjusted the second time around so it wasn't as snug. :)

Wow! An hour and a 50 cent cost?! Nice! I'm always amazed and jealous at sewing projects like these. I had one bad experience and gave up. I need to try again though. It would be so awesome to sew my own clothes. Maybe I'll finally try a sewing class at joanns or something. Your top looks great! Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteThis turned out great! Love the fabric. The more you use your serger the better you get at it. I have had a serger for over 20 years - not the same one - I am on my 2nd one - it is an older Bernina and a work horse.

ReplyDeleteThank you! If you can't find a class for garments, you should check out an adult school/community center that offers sewing classes. That's how I took mine! It was only $40 for 8 weeks of 4 hour long classes. It's gone up since then, but still a great deal!
